African Brothers Band - Me Poma, Stern's 1984

Temperatures are rising in the Netherlands, everybody searches for
some outdoor coolness, but there isn't.
After three hot days I finally got myself to posting some music.
African music that is, to adjust to the temperature.
Highlife from Ghana, with the African Brothers Band, very sunny
mellow sound that matches the weather perfectly.

Pacho Galan - Caracoleando, Tropical

COLOMBIA SPECIAL

Today's special about Colombia would not be the same without this
rare album. Pacho Galán was one of the biggest composers of Porro,
Fandango and the inventor of 'Merecumbé'. Colombian music would
also not have been the same without Pacho Galán.
'Ay Cosita Linda' was maybe his biggest hit and the birth of Merecumbé.
He himself was born on october the 4th in Soledad, Atlántico, and
wanted to be a musician since he was a child. Went to conservatoire
and was a professional musician at the age of 15.
The titlesong of this LP was also a great succes in those days.
Stay tuned...

La Sonora Dinamita - Cumbias de oro, Discos Fuentes / Esperance 1987/1988

Do Not Mistake !

COLOMBIA SPECIAL

The cover of this LP is just awful !
If you see an album in your secondhand store with a cover like this,
you skip it, but look out.
La Sonora Dinamita is a fantastic band.
This LP starts out with a commercial hit but then it gets more
interesting in my opinion. It's not a carreeralbum, they're hard
to find in Europe but it's a collector that contains some great
songs. 'Cumbias de Oro' is it's title although some tracks have
a certain salsa flavour over them.
All together, a great spin in a cheap coat.

tracks;

1 A mover la colita
2 Del monton
3 Mi son monteadentro
4 Bongo bongo
5 Murio en su ley
6 Chango
7 Mirala como va
8 Te pille pilla

10 Cosas que suceden
11 Jibarita encantadora

Puerto Candelaria and Doctor Salsa

Last wednesday I had a tremendous night, my friend Kai invited me
to see Puerto Candelaria at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam.
It was a surprising gig, very original and entertaining.
I had a great time seeing their guest of the night, Edmar Castaneda,
a harpplayer from Colombia too, whom they had never met before.
In the same building, Muziek_ gebouw_aan_het_IJ , the '10th World Harp Congress' was going on.
It was a spontaneous meeting, that worked out very nice, Edmar
plays that electric harp like no other, what a skillfulness.
After playing their concert, the group joined the crowd in the bar.
My friends brother dj Jairzinho, was playing some nice cumbia's.
I had the opportunity to meet the band's members and we had a nice
conversation about Colombian music, Medellin, where they're from etc.
Thanks so much Juan Diego, for inviting me to visit you in Medellin.
If I'm lucky and find the time, I'll be there later this year.
It was great talking to you and Juan Guillermo Aguilar, you can
expect my call.

Check the Website of Puerto_Candelaria

That same evening, during the break of the concert, I met some
other very interesting people, Doctor Salsa ( Ira Goldwasser ) and
his lovely wife Harriett Broekman, who used to be dancers at the
New York Palladium in the 50's.
I had a very nice chat with mrs. Salsa about the Ansonia label and
Latin music in general. Amazing to hear how she tells about all the
famous artists, of who she knows so many. Thank you Harriett for
the fantastic tips you gave me, and for the DVD and CD that you sent
me the day after.
I hope to meet you soon again.
Check this ; Doctor_Salsa_My_Space

About the music;
The first 2 songs are from 'Puerto Candelaria's' CD, 'Llegó la Banda'.
I didn't give you the whole CD because it is available in the
musicstore, go buy you one.
track No. 3 is by 'Doctor Salsa' as you can see.
track 4 and 5 are two tracks from the new group of two members of
Puerto Candelaria, Juan Diego Valencia and Juan Guillermo Aguilar.

great part of his life in Medellin, thanks Johan for being of
big help.

Beny Moré y su Orquesta - Y sus Amigos, Cubitas

Global Groove's Sunday Special is all about Cuban Music today.

I had a special friend in Cuban music. As I have friends in every
type of music. If I want to find out something concerning Reggae or
Popmusic, I turn to my buddy Gerard. If it concerns Samba, I turn to
Zeca or Justin, for questions about Cuban music I always went to my
late friend Dirk. On an occasion, Dirk was in some kind of financial
trouble, he sold me his complete collection of Cuban music. He knew
that I would keep it all together, waiting for better times. I am so
sorry he left us.
Now I am just wishfully assuming that the here-after is somehow
connected to the World Wide Web. This is my chance to give him
back some of the music that he loved so much ! To you Dirk !

Beny Moré y su Orquesta - Y sus Amigos

This is one of Dirk's albums,
Beny Moré with his sharp voice, a national hero in Cuba.
I quote the backcover;
"These recordings focus on different stages of Beny's carreer.
From the early days of the mambos recorded with Perez Prado in
Mexico, to Mariano Merceron, Ernesto Duarte and eventually his own
big band in Cuba. Also included here are two of the classical duos
with Pedro Vargas and Beny's own giant band recorded in the
mid 50's in Cuba."

4 Demasiado Santa

Ed Lincoln - Seu Piano e seu Orgao Espetacular, Musidisc 1963

Good afternoon, It has been a crazy week, lots of work and little time
to rip LP's. Now I finally find some time, the weather is so bad, I
can't photograph any albums, I use to do it outside with daylight.
It's a shame because I had some really nice African stuff waiting,
aswell as some Colombian material.
For now I've got to post something else, when I was in Rio,
february 2007, I went out shopping for old records with our great
friend 'Zecalouro' from Loronix. He took me to this tiny recordshack
somewhere in a Copacabana shoppingcentre, when searching I found
this 'Ed Lincoln'. I felt a little uncomfortable buying quite some LP's
there, a friend takes you to see his special source, I almost felt
like I was stealing something. Later I ripped some of the LP's I found
and sent them to Zeca, among others this one was posted at Loronix
already over a year ago. I think it is appropriate to post it
oncemore today. Hope you like it.
