Here's a post, especially interesting for it's collector's value, more then
for it's musical value. 'Los Millonarios' played instrumental versions of
well known songs. For instance, 'No me busques' of 'Los Corraleros
de Majagual', or 'El carretera' of 'Guillermo Portabales'. It gives an
impression of all the styles played in Colombian music. And as always,
'Discos Fuentes' brings a cover with a pretty girl. Check back cover
for style info. Attention : Track no. 1 jumps one time !

I always had a certain weakness for the unique sound of Monguito's
voice. When I was ripping This LP it made me remember some of
the old days, what a fine days they were. The great cover artwork is
by 'José Exposito'. Listen to this Fantastic album! That's an order.

When I am hunting for records at a fair for instance, I am always
looking out for anything on 'Discos Fuentes'. one of those days I
was the lucky finder of this rarity. Celina Gonzalez and Reutilio
Dominguez are Cubans, this is a Colombian release that
contains some of their early successes.

Before you start downloading this rare Calypso Collector, please
take notice of the fact that track # 8, 'Don't touch me nylon', is
unfortunately broken. It jumps a few times. I had to trick track #
10 too, it was too broken to place. This is a rare collector of old
calypsos, no year is given. An LP full of 'naughty songs', you don't
need too much imagination to hear between the lines. Taken the
condition and some cracks and hiss, this is still a spin worth it's
while, and how about that great cover ?
1 Lord Kitchener - Kitch

Today I'm in an all Brazilian mood, Rio on my mind, Yes,I know,
many bloggers have ripped this LP before me, but still I could not
resist to do it once more. And I enjoyed it very much ! A very young
'Martinho da Vila', recorded 39 years ago and sounding as fresh as if
it was yesterday. This album deserves to be posted again and again.

On the same label as the previous post, two years later, but with
a name quite similar, here is 'Isaura Garcia'. 6 songs of Noel Rosa
and 6 songs of Chico Buarque de Hollanda, sung with so much feeling,
Noel Rosa would have been proud.

It was a lovely day in February last year, when I was on my Rio record
hunt. I discovered a little hidden recordstore in 'Rua 7 de setembro'
downtown Rio, and then it happened. I could hardly believe my
eyes when I found this rare LP. I think I payed something like 15
Reais, my day was made ! Listen carefully to this fantastic piece of
Samba History, all songs written by Noel Rosa and sung by Aracy
de Almeida. I always wondered how it is that one time they say
'Araci' and the other 'Aracy', one way or another, I love it.
1 Meu barracao

Fantastic record by 'Mr. Music', 'Thomas Mapfumo' comes in with
an album that is one of his very best. " Music has been my life, It
knows no colour, racial or religious boundaries As long as it touches
your soul, you will flow with it. I hope that all who hear my music will
become one with me I thank my African forefathers For bringing me
up in music." Thomas Mapfumo
2 Kufa kwangu
Time for some Cuban music. One of Cuba's most famous bringers
of Afro-Cuban, is Arsenio Rodriguez, his songs are still being
played today. Arsenio lost his sight at the age of seven, but his skills,
playing the 'Trés' stand firm. Singers on this album are; 'Raffi Martinez',
'Israel Castro', 'Candido Antommattei' and 'Chewi Rivera'.
1 El reloj de pastora

One of Colombia's finest Salsagroups is without any doubt 'the Latin
Brothers', being part of the 'Discos Fuentes' family they enjoy all the
benefits. As I found out before, this is a close group of musicians.
'Julio Ernesto Estrada' or 'Fruko', is in charge of the 'Dirección
General', and that shows. This recording was made with 8
different singers, and they all know what they're doing.
Check the listing below.
1 Tremendo cachetero
2 A pesar
3 Juanita y su camarita
5 Que voy a hacer
6 El hablador
7 El color del amor

This Sam Mangwana album was already posted before on 11 of May.
Unfortunately there were some wrong files there, thanks to Gonzalez
on Speed, a new Global Groover, we found out the error. Thanks
Gonzalez. Check out this superb 'Sam Mangwana',
great early 80's Soukous.
1 Affaire disco
2 Celica souvenir
3 Waka waka
4 Tika nasakola
This 'best of' is not a 'best of' as I see it. It sounds more like a
one-session recording then like a collector. Tracks 2 and 3 are
written by 'Alton Ellis' if I'm not mistaking. Backed by 'the
Revolutionairies', 'Gregory Isaacs', with his voice
like sugar and glue, comes in with a great LP.
Recorded at Channel One Studio.
I like this one extremely much !
1 Special guest
2 Willow tree
3 Breaking up
4 Double attack
5 My number one
6 No speech
7 Tear drops
8 Cool you
10 Look before you leap
While I was working on this post, gathering information, I found ou
that 'Miss Baikinange' of 'Schadenfreudian Therapy' already placed
it. I guess I knew but didn't pay attention. Check her page, linked at
the sidebar. This is a great album, worthy of a second posting !
'Aldwyn Roberts' or 'Lord Kitchener' is the main man in
Calypso. Fantastic songs without exeption.
1 Wife and mother
2 Red head
3 My wife's nightie
4 Kitch take it easy

I found this 'Pacheco' at the last recordfair in Utrecht, april this year.
It is a Fania production from Probably 1972. Released in Venezuela
by 'el Palacio de la Música'. The only information available is as
follows; singers are 'Pete 'Conde' Rodriguez', 'Pacheco' and 'Alberto
Valdez'. Directed by 'Johnny Pacheco' and
produced by 'Jerry Masucci'.
1 Soy hijo del Siboney
2 Me voy contigo
3 Guaguanco a mantilla
5 El bajio
6 Sale a buscar
7 Me dijo que si
8 Ritmo merembe
9 Para gozar belen
10 Que se funan
A quite special post today, this is Laba Sosseh, I don't know where
he's from but he's ever so welcome. If I see a SAR production from
1981, produced by Roberto Torres, I trust it fully. This is a recording
very different from most SAR LP's. In a very rhythmic flow the SAR
musicians combine African tunes with Latin ones. Laba Sosseh's
voice rounds it all up nicely. I hope you enjoy.
Another RCA samba album from the 70's, perhaps not the best of
'Os Originais do Samba', but it is getting better along the spin.
Contains a couple of great tunes to my opinion.
1 Vou levanto meu canto
2 Ave Maria do Salgueiro
3 Só quem cantou fui eu
7 Nego veio quando morre
8 Os bons sambistas vao voltar
10 Rabo de saia
11 Eu agradeço
12 Cachaça no tanque
If I am correct, this must be the first volume of 'Brasil...sambe ou se
mande', so it should be from around 1973, since the others are. I was
so lucky to find 3 of them on my last Brazilian recordhunt. Pedrinho
Rodrigues e os Nacionais bring some wellknown samba songs, in an
uncomplicated way, enjoy ! Voltamos hoje com um pouquinho de
Samba gostoso, espero que vocês gostam.
1 Cosa nostra
2 Minha viola
3 Batuque na cozinha
4 Baba de quiabo
5 Nó na cana
6 Ninguém tasca
7 Balança povo
8 Ladrao que entra na casa de pobre só leva susto
9 Esperanças perdidas
10 Moro na Roça
This here LP is a real treasure, I played it over and over, and over
again. From '73 this Johnny Pacheco with singer Pete 'El Conde'
Rodriguez, a Fania beauty. It's a shame that no musicians are credited
here, 'Tres de Cafe, Dos de Azucar, Ponle Punto'. Produced by
'Jerry Masucci' and 'Johnny Pacheco'. Fantastic background
vocals, great rhythms, " Azucar !"
1 Primoroso cantar
2 Cositas buenas
3 Ponle punto
4 La gloria eres tu
5 Los diablitos
6 El piro de farra
7 Son labori
8 Harina con boniato
9 Bajo el viejo cristal
10 Viralo al reves
What we have here is a very special post. Requested by Justin
Thyme, this is 'Hugh Mundell'. Hugh was murdered at 21 years
old, sitting in a car with 'Junior Reid', another great talent. His
album ' Africa must be free by 1983' was a tremendous hit, the
cruel thing is that this was the year, he got shot. From 1983 this
is 'Blackman's Foundation', a 4 star rated album by 'All Music
Guide', being one of Hugh's latest recordings. As I was told by
the salesman who sold it to me, his latest was this rare 12" single,
' Hey Good Looking', that I added as Bonustrack.
Hope you enjoy this,
1 Blackman's foundation
2 Great tribulation
3 Time has come
4 Stop 'em Jah
5 Time and place
6 Don't stay away
7 Can't pop no style
8 Rastafari's call
9 One Jah, one aim, one destiny
10 Hey good looking
Somehow I feel a strong connection with 1988 tonight.
Therefore I post this 'Chimurenga' LP from that year.
The Four Brothers bring a great album, guitar driven
dancematerial from Zimbabwe, I always loved this one.
'Up Up Tempo Dance Dynamite from the Dominican Republic'
that's what the cover says and that's what it is, a dancer.
Hot Hot Hot,
1 La tijera
2 Agua de tu fuente
3 La situacion
4 El beso robao
7 Mañana por la mañana
8 Los caballos
9 Lindas mujer
10 Lucas y Radhames
11 La lengua
12 San Francisco
13 Homenaje a Bolo
Here we go with another SAR production, from 1980 this is 'Papaito',
SAR LP's often have great covers, like this one by José Exposito.
Roberto Torres produced it, played the 'Guiro' and did background
vocals too. Great stuff !
1 Sabina Gomez
3 Porque me siento Cubano
4 Aprietala en el rincon
5 Fuego en los bomberos
6 Sin caña y sin platanal
Yesterday I had a bit of an offday, after that fantastic match, the
Netherlands played monday, I had a few beers, well you know.
This morning I was going to do some ripping but my nextdoor
neighbours started to break out walls with lots of noise so, I have
to get out of here. I had this Pedrinho Rodrigues waiting for a
moment like this. Hope to find some peace later today, we'll
be back then.
01 Só quero um xodó
02 Nao chora meu amor
04 Néga Tijucana
05 Retalhos de Cetim
06 Boa noite
07 Boi da cara preta ( Eneida, amor e fantasia )
08 Cai cai
09 É preciso cantar
10 Casca de coco
Something funny is going on here, the A-side of this LP has 4 numbers
according to the backcover, but the LP has 5 tracks on each side.
When we look at the arrangerscredits we see that we miss track 2.
If I listen closely I can not make out excactly, so for the record
I named that second track; 'El hulk de la salsa', after the albumtitle.
I hope you aprove there. By the way, don't you just love that cover ?
This is an old time personal favorite, especially #'s 9 and 10 I used
to play a lot on party's. Johnny Zamot beats
his rhythms tide, check it out !
1 La musica es mi vida
2 'El hulk de la Salsa'
3 Ay corazon
4 La salsa ahora
5 Entre amistad
6 La humanidad
7 Amor tragico
9 Yo soy boricua
Today is a buisy day for me, tonight we'll have the first matches
in the group of the Netherlands, we talk about soccer. The European
Championship Soccer. Before that I have my work, so some early
posting today. As you may remember, about a month ago we had 'Roda
de Samba vol. 1', Now this here is volume 2, I have been trying to find
the original cover. My copy is a French pressing and I have no idea
how the Brazilian one looks like. If you have it , we would love to see
it, thanks. If we forget about the cover we can check on the music.
Really nice Samba compilation with more or less the same artists
as on the first volume. 'Aparecida', 'Sabrina', 'Rubens da Mangueira',
but also the great 'Nelson Cavaquinho' appears on this one.
I always had a certain weakness for his voice.
1 Aparecida - Proteçao
2 Sabrina - Acalentava
3 Nelso Cavaquinho - Quero alegria
4 Roda de Samba - Cantos Afros
5 Rubens da Mangueira - Por cima da linha
6 Aparecida - Rosas pra Lasa
7 Nelson Cavaquinho - Armas proibidas
8 Rubens da Mangueira - Morro velho
9 Sabrina - Liberdade
10 Dida - Chegou quem faltava chegar
'Chimurenga' is what they call this type of music, and it is from Zimbabwe.
Thomas Mapfumo comes in with this superb LP, he is the master in this style.
Originally released on Gramma in 1980, this is a 1986 re-release on
Earthworks. Very subtil guitar pushed African type of groove.
You'd better judge yourself.
Around 1980 there was a movement going on called 'Dub Poetry'.
There were types with colourful names like, 'Oku Onoura', 'Benjamin
Zepheniah' and 'Muta Baruka'. One of the founders of this movement
was without any doubt, 'Linton Kwesi Johnson', on this here record
he was still performing under the name 'Poet and the Roots'. 'Dread
Beat an' Blood', is a poetic collection of 8 protestsongs.
An LP I played thousands of times !
1 Dread beat an' blood
2 Five nights of bleeding
3 Doun di road
4 Song of blood
5 It dread inna Inglan
6 Come wi goh dung deh
7 Man free
8 All wi doin is defendin
Now here is something very special, I need to make something clear.
Since this fine music is unavailable in most parts of the world, I am
making a big exeption, normally I would not post a CD which might
still be in the stores, Global Groove doesn't want to hurt anybody's
business. Come on Fuentes, spread this material around ! Europe,
Asia and other parts o.t.w. want this too ! Super nice compilation
of rare Colombian recordings, Discos Fuentes'
vaults contain fantastic stuff.
1 La Sonora Cordobesa - El pajaro picon ( Paseaito )
2 Carlos Roman y su Sonora Vallenata - Very very well ( R&R )

13 Los Corraleros de Majagual - La adivinanza ( Paseaito )
14 Los Hermanos Marquez - Yo conozco a Claudia ( Merengue )
I don't have a year on this fine reggae album, early eighties would
be my guess. With 'Sly and Robbie', 'Roots Radics' and the 'High
Times Band', this can't go wrong, Produced by Prince Jammy,
Recorded at Channel One and King Tubby's Studio.
A sweet session.

Today I have a funpost ! In an hour or so, the European 'Futbol'
(soccer) Championship in Austria and Switzerland is about to start.
For the occasion I thought it would be fun to post some music by
the two greatest soccerplayers of the previous century. 'Pelé' and
'Cruyff'. I'd say Cruyff was a good second if we speak about soccer,
but if we speak about music, I am affraid he is far from that position.
Brazilians have a nature, they're born with music in their vains. Pelé
comes in with a great Bossa composition, backed by 'Sergio Mendes',
what could go wrong ? World, please have mercy on Johan Cruyff
and us Dutch people, we don't have that sunny way. What we do
have however, is a good sense of humour, Johan Cruyff surprises
us with this 1969 Dutch Carnaval number, once again there
is no comparison.
1 O coraçao do rei
2 Meu mundo é uma bola
5 Voltando a Baurú

1 Johan Cruyff - Oei oei oei
2 Johan Cruyff - Alle stoppen ineens naar de knoppen
Another great find of this afternoon in Amsterdam,
'Los Nemus del Pacifico' is a very fine band from the Fuentes stable.
It is one big family at Fuentes studio's. On bass and artistic direction,
Julio E.Estrada... yes 'Fruko'. You can hear Fruko's tide hand of
orchestral leadership running this session, very nice and tide indeed.
1 Lindas y bellas
2 Por que disimulamos
4 Si tu no, la ptra
5 Para la luna
6 La lengua vipirina

It has been a hectic day yesterday, no time left for funthings, like
working on this page. Today however I found the time, when I was
in Amsterdam for work, to check up on an old buddy's 'second hand
record' store. Jan somehow always manages to lay his hand on some
obscure material, like this 'Chico da Silva'. First LP I find on him,
and a good one. With pleasure I present to you, " Chico da Silva ".
1 O barba azul
2 Será que tem ?

3 Guys, 3 voices, Israel Vibration, these 3 singers have the
traditional habit of rotating the solopart of each song. It's a very
nice experience to see them perform live. I was at a concert of
them at Paradiso Amsterdam some years ago, and I had
a great time, super social reggae.
1 Give I grace

This Samba album by Maria Creuza is a Fantastic spin.
I found it some years ago in an Amsterdam secondhand recordstore.
My copy is a French one as you can see, the bottomcover is the
original one. No matter what cover you like most, this LP sounds
so fresh and clear, and it contains some great songs. Aqui temos
um album muito bom por Maria Creuza, um album que eu sempre
gostei pa caramba, vai escutar com bastante volume.
