Scientist - Scientist encounters Pac-Man, Greensleeves 1982

Today, we'll start up a series of Dub-Albums with many to follow.
Dub music is an instrumental kind of Reggae with lots of echoe,
and other effects. First in line is Scientist, his albums always show
fantastic artwork, mostly done by 'Tony McDermott', such as this one.
This LP follows up a series of great albums as shown in topright
drawing on backcover.
The titles on this LP refer to those albums.
Check out that nice story on the backcover.

tracks;

1 Under surveilance
2 Prince's wrath
3 Space invaders re-group
4 World Cup Squad lick their wounds
5 Vampire initiative
6 Malicious intent
7 The dark secret of the box
8 S.O.S.
9 Man-trap
10 Look out - behind you !

P.S. , Tracks 1 to 5 are melted together on side-A and 6 to 10 on side-B.
I tryed to cut them as good as posssible but I might be wrong here and there.
Therefore I recommend to play them as One.

Johnny Pacheco - 10 Great Years, Fania 1973

Another great Johnny Pacheco LP, from 1973 on Fania.
This copy has been played almost too often, unfortunately it has
a little hiss and track # 7 starts with a crack and a jump,
but still I didn't want to withhold this beautiful album from you.
'10 Great Years', from '63 to '73, Johnny Pacheco comes in with
a nice selection of hits from between those years.
Singers are, like on many of Pacheco's albums, 'Pete 'El Conde' Rodriguez',
and Chivirico Davila.

I quote the backcover;

" For the past 10 years, Johnny Pacheco has been one of the biggest
influences in Latin Music. A favorite with both the Latino and the American
dancing public since his rise to national fame with the Pachanga,
Johnny keeps you moving and swinging with his 'tipico' rhythms.
In this collectors album, you will be able to sample some of the hit
tunes which have delighted people over the past 10 years."

El Gran Pacheco - Cañonazo, Fania 1972

Until now we saw two great latinlabels at Global Groove.
the Colombian label, "discos Fuentes' and New York label 'SAR'.
It's about time to post some latin of the great 'Fania',
a New York label that started early 70's, correct me if I'm wrong.
One of Fania's biggest stars through the years is without
any doubt, 'Johnny Pacheco'.

I quote the backcover of this LP;

Sound, rhythm, and change.....three words that seem to
go well with Johnny Pacheco.
The sound was Charanga, the rhythm was Pachanga, and the
change was welcomed by dancers around the world;
but this is a restless world of innovations, and the most
restless of all is JOHNNY !
Change the sound, change the rhythm, charge the air with
musical energy......the flute become drums, the violins
become trumpets, blend in voices, and the metamorphosis
is complete.
Fania Records is proud to launch this new sound which is being
presented to you, the listener, by Johnny Pacheco.

Etoile de Dakar - Absa Gueye, pam 1980

When early eighties the first Youssou N'Dour LP, 'Immigrès/Bitim rew'
reached me, I was astonished. What a different sound.
After some digging I found the LP he worked on before that, 'Absa Gueye'.
Listen and find out what a treasure this is.

Years later I went to a Youssou N'Dour concert in 'Nighttown' Rotterdam,
It was great and as I left the building, some of the band's people
were selling 'tama's' ( talking drums )at the corridor.
200 Dutch Guilders they asked( in those days ), quite some money
I thought. They were friendly pushing me to buy the drum and told
me they were made by 'Assane Thiam', Youssou's Tamaplayer.
Wow, now I got really interested, these were fine pieces of handicraft
by the great 'Assane'. I said ;" okay, I'll buy one if you have it signed
by Youssou N'Dour", and so it went. LUCKY BASTARD I AM !The guy went away
with the talking drum and within 3 or 4 minutes he was back with
it, signed on one side by Youssou N'Dour, and on the other side by
'Assane Thiam'. To our surprise the whole group was sitting at the
nextdoor snackbar later, having fun and in a very relaxed atmosphere, they
were giving autographs to everybody, supernice.

Dr. Alimantado - Best Dressed Chicken in Town, Greensleeves 1978

One of the best reggae albums I know !
This is an alltime classic, I listened to this LP thousands of times,
ever since it was released in 1978 and still I keep playing this jewel.

I quote All Music Guide;

< One-of-a-kind Jamaican DJ Dr. Alimantado found unexpected fame with U.K. punks after
Johnny Rotten bestowed his blessings. The hoopla was certainly warranted
based on the high quality of his mid-'70s sides, several of which
are included on Best Dressed Chicken in Town. Handling production
chores himself, Alimantado enlisted top reggae engineers and producers like
Lee "Scratch" Perry, King Tubby, and Scientist to add their own alchemy to the mix.
The dub-inflected tracks and Alimantado's idiosyncratic musings
prove a potent combination, especially on standouts like "Poison Flower"
(a version of a Horace Andy vocal), the Rasta vengeance number
"I Killed the Barber," and the comically over-the-top title cut.
Other highlights include the bubbly "Unitone Skank,( end of quote )"

tracks

1 Best dressed chicken in town
2 Just the other day
3 Poison flour
4 Gimme my gun
5 I killed the barber
6 Unitone skank

at Global Groove, it is more an item for Loronix.
I offered it to Zecalouro from Loronix when I visited him in Rio
last year, with all RESPECT Zeca, I never understood you didn't use it.
I remember going through that Beautiful book on Bossa Nova
by Caetano Rodrigues and found that it's even registered there.
Don't mean to offend

King Sunny Adé - Ajoo, Sunny Alade Records, 1983

From Nigeria we have here, King Sunny Adé and his African Beats,
this is Juju music, a laydback smooth type of African music with humming
talkingdrums, steeley guitars and mellow voices.
It's incredible to hear 18 people play like ONE, beautiful.
Ajoo was also released in a European cut which is very different from this African release.
One sidenote; The first 3 numbers are melted together as if they are one, it was very difficult to cut it into 3 numbers, considering the fact I don't understand a word they sing here, I am SURE I
cut them completely wrong, please forgive me.

tracks;

1 Ajo ni mo re

2 Pegan pegan

3 Oluwa lagboju le

4 Gbeyo gbeyo

5 Penkele

6 Ewele

7 Tolongo

Composer - Trinidad, land of Calypso, Antilliana ( prob. late 60's )

I have to gamble on the year on this LP, I'd say 1969, if any one knows..
If you listen to the hilarius song 'Child training' on the album,
'All time Calypso from Trinidad and Tobago', posted earlier this week,
you know what to expect here,
Composer is a funny guy,

tracks;

1 Permission
2 I love you

Aparecida - Aparecida, CID 1975

I first heard Aparecida on 'Roda de Samba', also from 1975,
( see earlier this past week ) so when I found this record at that tiny shack, back in Rua 7 de setembro, in Rio, it made me very happy.
Produced by Durval Ferreira and with the participation of Chicinho de Acordeon this is a very pure piece of samba.

4 Talunde
5 Tereza Aragao
6 A Maria começa a beber
7 Meu Sao Bebedito

With this post I'd like to tell you folks what to expect from Global Groove .
I started to collect music around 1975, and my collection has grown
to be what it is today, some 3000 LP's and an equal amount of CD's.
It contains a lot of popmusic from the 60's and 70's,

such as, Reggae, Ska, Rocksteady and Dancehall.
Son, Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Porro,Tropical de Colombia and Reggaeton.
Brazilian styles like, Samba, Pagode , Forro and Bossa-Nova.
Calypso, Mento and Carribbean aswell as several African styles like Highlife,
Zulu-Jive, Afro-Cuban, Rumba Congolesa or Soukous.
Indian Raga's, Bollywood and other South-East Asian stuff.
Today there's a lot of nice music from Eastern Europe like Balkanbeat and other Gypsie material,
well as you see this page is only beginning. The future looks very sunny at Global Groove !
Thank you for visiting.

Reggae Monster Originals, Part 1

From around 1980 I started to collect Reggae L.P.'s
When many years later the CD era started I made a selection of tracks that I used to play a lot.
This is part 1 of 4, in my humble opinion only killers. Track no. 2 is by M. Werner , it is a 10" single and to be honest I don't even know what the M. stands for.
Another favorite is track no. 7, by Willie Williams and Cousin Marshall, that bass that you feel in your stomach, turn up the volume and skank across the floor !

Os Cinco Crioulos - Samba no Duro, vol. 2

This is Samba with a capital 'S', a session so basic and uncomplicated.
These 5 guys are heroes, Jair do Cavaquinho with his fragile voice, Nelson Sargento ( da Mangueira ), Elton Medeiros, Mauro Duarte and Anescarzinho do Salgueiro.
I don't know about you, but I just love this.

Guillermo Buitrago - Diciembre y ano nuevo

Here we have a fine treat by Guillermo Buitrago from Colombia. Buitrago lived from 1920 till 1949, this stuff comes from the vaults of Discos Fuentes. Very hard to find material by the King of Musica Parrandera, very nice. new_link

Dr. Victor Abimbola Olaiya - " In the Sixties "

Well here we go. My first post on the world wide web.
When I was visiting one of the biggest recordfairs of Europe, in Utrecht, I found this rare highlife LP from Nigeria. One of my friends and I were looking for just anything by this artist, so I was pleasantly surprised to find this album.
This is Dr. Victor Olaiya, " In the Sixties " Polydor 1966 ( ? )
